Arrival in Canada…of the infirmed - 2 July

If you look at the globe, how long to you think it would take to fly from Lima, Peru to Toronto, Canada? I though about 12 hours. Turned out to be 11 hours. Ok, that is fine. Considering that the flight departed at 01:55, I could sleep on the plane. 4 hour lay over during which I realise that I was sick. But it didn’t worry me too much as my flight departed at 15:00 and landed at 17:00 in Vancouver. Cool. 2 hour flight then I can get to bed. Right? WRONG! I forgot to take the 3 time zones into account. So, for me, a 2 hour flight became a 5 hour flight! And when you are sick, this is the worst.
April was working so her parents were nice enough to come pick me up at the airport. Quite different to South Africa, the people that come to pick you up can meet you at baggage claim. By this time I was knackered, but since it was only 17:00, not really time for bed yet. So, Gillian and Kevin (April’s parents), took met to a concert help as a fund raiser. A local band’s gear got stolen and the other bands were playing to help him recoup his losses. The crowd was slightly older, but still nice. After 2 beers, however, my batteries flat. So I didn’t get to see April on my much anticipated day of arrival.
The next morning April was walking loudly in the house, apparently, but I was finished. The flu had really set in and I had bite marks all over my legs. Remember my 1-day stint volunteering in Pisco? I got nailed by fleas. It is the itchiest my legs have ever been! I did eventually wake up and it was great to see my good friend! Back in South Africa, 1.5 years ago, I told all our friends just before April returned to Canada, that we should all meet in Canada in June/July 2011 to visit April. I was the only one who made it :) So this was a great reunion! And so the North American leg of my travels kicks off.
