17 January: Cape to Rio, day 2

My mom packed some “padkos” (ready made food for the road). By this time everyone had had some of it and was full of compliments (we share onboard, like communism :) ).

When we tried to start the diesel engine to charge the batteries, it wouldn’t take. We figured out that there was an airlock in the fuel line. Leroy and I spent most of the afternoon bleeding the fuel line. After all our efforts, it still wouldn’t start, so we decided to leave it until the next day to try again. Now we started to plan as if we had lost the engine and would have to have conserve power. That would mean no music, no laptops and eventually no satellite communication. The mood on the boat wasn’t positive and the light winds didn’t help.
